X's Big Accomplishment

Eighty dollars may not seem like a ton of money but, to a six year old boy trying to save up half the price of a DS, at times it seemed like an unattainable amount. Xander has had his heart set on a DS (a handheld gaming system) for quite some time and David promised to kick in half the cost if Xander could save up the other half. With a monthly spending allowance of just five dollars it took A LOT of months of saving rather than spending! It also took some tremendous will power to not just cave and spend his money on other, less expensive toys that he wanted. Grandma and Grandpa Pierce visited last month and gave each of the kids some spending money and that was what pushed Xander past the needed amount. Finally, Xander has his DS!

In school Xander was asked to write down what his greatest accomplishment is and he wrote: "Win I am tring to saf my mney". (Interpretation for those who aren't used to reading 6 year-old-writing: "When I am trying to save my money"). David and I are so proud of him and he is obviously proud of himself as well.

You know, there is a book called Emotion Intelligence (or Emotion IQ). There's a cool self-control experiment with children using marshmallows...Anyway, the study showed that children who were able to exert self-control with an end reward in mind were much more successful and functional as adults. You have a son with a bright future ahead of him!!

Sorry - Emotional Intelligence, not Emotion. Twice my fingers didn't want to type the "al."
